Our Adoption Process

All Points West GSP Rescue is looking for responsible and caring people to give a GSP their much needed second chance at happiness. If you have not previously owned a GSP, we highly recommend that you read "Is a GSP Right for You?" Please read this article to gain a better understanding of the GSP breed and the type of environment in which it thrives.

The first step is to fill out the application. You have several options to submit your completed application. You can visit our Adoption Application Page to get started right away.  The quickest way to get the adoption process started is to complete the online adoption application.

**Please note that we currently have a waitlist of pre-approved adopters looking for a Shorthair. Please do not let that discourage you from completing an application if there is a specific dog that you like. While we do have a waitlist, many of our pre approved adopters may be looking for different traits or qualities (sex, age) in their new companion due to their current home/family situation. (other dogs, children etc.)

Our highest priority is always to the dog, to match all of our rescued shorthairs to the best home possible for their specific needs. Pre- approved adopters are given first priority if we receive in a new dog that is a match for them so we encourage you to complete an application, particularly if your adoption timeline is flexible.

If you would prefer, you can download and print our application by selecting the PDF icon listed below. You can then scan and email the completed application to allpointswestgsp@gmail.com. Your final option would be to mail in your completed form to APWGSPR, PO BOX 2822, Elizabeth, CO 80107.

One of our adoption committee members will contact you once we receive your application. Your references will be checked and if all looks good we will schedule a home visit with one of our volunteers. The entire process typically takes 1-2 weeks total.  If you successfully complete our approval process you will be notified of approval either by phone or via email.

Now the fun starts! It is time to really review the available dogs on our website and let us know which ones you are interested in so we can try to make the perfect match for your family!

We require :

  • Application - Please complete your adoption application to begin the adoption process.  You can find the application on the Adoption Application Page. Please provide as much information as you can about your family, other pets, activity level, and why you want to adopt a rescue German Shorthaired Pointer. While we encourage you to let us know on your application if one of our dogs has captured your interest, we use this simply as a guide for matching and your listing of specific dog in no way implies claim to this particular dog.  NOTE: adoption applications expire 6 months from the date of receipt. If you have already submitted an Adoption Application (even if you are a returning adopter) and it has been longer than 6 months, you will need to fill out a new adoption application.

  • Application Review - You will be called or emailed shortly after your application is received, usually within 5 business days, to further discuss your application and what you are looking for in a German Shorthaired Pointer companion. We will also determine whether we currently have any GSPs that we feel might fit in your family situation.

  • Reference Checks - All references will be checked prior to a home visit. We will contact your current vet, if you have one, to verify that any pets already in your home are current on their annual exam, vaccinations and spay/neuter. We email personal references (if email is provided) or call them if necessary. Email is best to keep the process timely and to avoid playing phone tag and your references can respond when they are available. We recommend that you reach out to your personal references to let them know we may be contacting them.

  • Home Visit - A volunteer will come to your home to visit with you and discuss care of German Shorthaired Pointers. Also, the volunteer will look for any potential problems and check to be sure that your fencing is secure. Your home visit does not mean you have been approved. The home visit will either be done by one of our volunteers or another affiliated rescue group.

  • Approval - After the above steps have been completed all your information will be reviewed and a decision will be made about adoption. If at this point you are approved to adopt, APWGSPRs Adoption Coordinator will help guide you to the appropriate dog for your family.

  • Talk with a foster home - If a GSP is identified as a potential match, we will put you in contact with the foster home so you can have a more detailed discussion about that particular dog. Based on that conversation, if the foster home and you agree that the dog continues to appear to be a good match, you will schedule a visit to meet the dog. The rescue dog will need to meet all members of the family, including other pets, at some point during the process.

  • Adoption agreement -  If after meeting the dog, everyone agrees he/she is a good fit for your family we will ask you to complete an adoption agreement. For the protection of the dogs we place, everyone that adopts a GSP from APWGSPR will be required to sign an adoption contract. If you do not agree to the stipulations in the agreement exactly as written, we cannot adopt a dog to you. Please note that we reserve the right to deny anyone the ability to adopt any dog from our rescue program for any reason.  All adoptions are at our sole discretion. If you would like additional information on our adoption contract you can email allpointswestgsp@gmail.com and a copy of our contract will be sent to you electronically.

  • Adoption donation - These monies help to defray some of the medical and other costs we incur while the dog is in our care. Pay by check or credit card (via PayPal). All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, wormed, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and microchipped. Occasionally, a dog requires special vet care while in our program. We will provide you with the dog’s veterinary records so you will be fully informed of any known medical conditions.
