Sage - CO
Sage here! I am a 2 year old female pointer/hound mix from New Mexico, where I was brought into a local shelter as a stray. The first couple years of my life are top secret, and you humans may never know what I was up to before the shelter. Luckily, it doesn't really matter! I am in Colorado now and ready for the next chapter to begin.
When I first arrived at my foster home, I was a little nervous about my new digs. It took me a couple of days to adjust, but then I realized: living inside is AWESOME. I mean, free meals, all the treats and toys I could ever need, and my very own dog bed? It's pretty great! I like living inside so much that I have developed excellent house manners. I'm house trained, sleep in my crate, and don't chew on things I shouldn't. I've been known to get in a trash can and have tried to counter surf, but can you blame me? There's food! I love food and would do anything for a tasty treat. I am also quickly learning basic commands, how to settle in a dog bed, and stay in my kennel when the humans leave. I am still learning how to walk on a leash, but for the most part I am actually pretty good and ready to improve! I can't be trusted off leash yet, but maybe one day with the right training.
I am part pointer and have many of the pointer characteristics you may know and love: I'm curious, affectionate, smart, and eager to please. I am also part hound: I am an EXCELLENT sniffer and my nose could take me all the way to the next state if you'd let it. I use my sense of smell to guide me with everything, including learning about new people and environments. I hope that my new family will take me on lots of sniffaris, walks where I can just take my time and sniff everything. Aside from my nose, I also love to sing! I bay or bark when I am excited or playful, when I need something (potty, dinner), and to say goodbye when left alone. This is part of who I am, and I need to be able to express myself in my next home.
I currently live with three other dogs, and they're pretty cool! Having another dog around would really help me build confidence and learn the ropes in my new home. I have been around toddlers, and honestly they make me a little nervous. I would do best in a home with older kids, 10 and up. I also haven't been around cats, and not sure how I would do with them. My current owners have chickens and I was *very* interested in them at first, but that interest has largely worn off.
On the top of my list to Santa Paws this year I wrote "forever home"--I don't need much else! If you're looking for a playful, easy going girl with excellent vocals, apply for me today. I'd love to find my new home this pawliday season!
A note from Sage's foster family: Sage is incredibly sweet, but takes some time to warm up. This is not uncommon with shelter strays, and she is building up more confidence every day! We are asking that any potential adopters go through the foster to adopt program and let her spend at least 72 hours (but ideally even longer) decompressing in your home before deciding to adopt her or not. Sage has been with her current foster family for just over one month and has followed the 3-3-3 rule to a tee. The version of sage that you will initially meet is wildly different from the one you'll get to know even three days out.
